Mid-Hudson News, March 24, 2005 Rockland Lawmakers Urge State To Pass Stem Cell
Research Legislation The Rockland County is backing a New York Senate bill that supports a comprehensive plan for establishing guidelines and funding for stem cell, embryonic and fetal tissue research, while prohibiting human cloning. The legislation, sponsored by State Senator Liz Krueger, will position New York State as a leader in stem cell research that will unlock extraordinary scientific and economic potential, the local lawmakers said. The bill sets guidelines on the conduct of stem cell research and features strong consumer protections, the creation of a 12-member advisory commission, a thorough statement of informed consent, and will ensure that NY remains a leader in biomedical research as its best scientists work to cure incapacitating diseases and conditions. “An estimated 128 million Americans suffer from the crippling economic and psychological burden of chronic, degenerative and acute diseases, some of them are friends, neighbors or relatives,” said Rockland lawmaker Ellen Jaffee. “Breakthrough scientific discoveries that lead to new treatments and potential cures of debilitating and fatal diseases do not happen every day. Scientists all over the world are beginning to unravel the mysteries of diseases such as Cancer, Parkinson’s, Juvenile Diabetes, Heart Disease, ALS, Alzheimer’s, and Spinal Cord Injury, and rethinking how to treat them. This is the promise of stem cell research. Most importantly, the long term research could save millions of lives and transform our health care industry." |
