Receives Legislative Friend of Farm Animals Award from Farm Sanctuary Presents Resolution
Recognizing “Animal Guardian Day” to In Defense of Animals Albany, NY – On
Saturday night, State Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) was honored
with the Legislative Friend of Farm Animals Award from Farm
Sanctuary at their Annual Gala.
The Annual Gala took place at the Plaza Hotel and was chaired by Mary
Tyler Moore. The Legislative Friend of
Farm Animals Award was presented by Linda Blair, the renowned actress –
turned animal rights activist - who starred in the Exorcist. Ms Blair hailed Senator Krueger for being “a champion for the protection of downed
animals” and praised the introduction of a bill in the Senate to prevent the
slaughter of non-ambulatory animals for human food. Ms. Blair also mentioned Senator Krueger’s
participation in Farm Sanctuary’s Walk for Farm Animals and her consistent
support of legislation to protect animals. “The truth is that Farm Sanctuary should be honored tonight for their
many years of hard work and advocacy on humane issues,” stated Senator
Krueger at the Farm Sanctuary Gala.
“I can only hope that by bringing more attention to the inhumane
treatment of farm animals, we can raise consciousness of the issue. I am pleased to be a member of the animal
welfare movement and I promise to continue to do my part by advocating in the
State Legislature.”
On Sunday morning, Senator Krueger joined the festivities of Animal Guardian Day, sponsored by In Defense of Animals (IDA) at Central Park. The event, which was attended by several animal welfare groups, was an adopt-a-thon and advocacy day. Senator Krueger was also given the opportunity to present an official State Senate resolution recognizing Animal Guardian Day throughout New York State.
“Through their Guardian Campaign, In Defense of Animals has worked tirelessly to change the culture of ownership that pervades our treatment of animals,” said Senator Krueger. “I am pleased to present a resolution to IDA today in recognition of Animal Guardian Day.”
- - - - - - - Founded in 1986, Farm Sanctuary has
grown to over 100,000 members, with farm animal shelters in New York and
California. Farm Sanctuary’s mission
encompasses not only the rescue and refuge of abused and neglected farm
animals, but also numerous campaign, education, development, legal, and
legislative efforts on behalf of farm animals. From the first ever conviction
of a stockyard for cruelty to animals, to the most recent legislative efforts
in congress, Farm Sanctuary utilizes its many departments to bring an end to
farm animal suffering. During the past 16 years, under the direction of veterinarian Dr. Elliot Katz, In Defense of Animals has expanded its mission and has grown to be one of the nation’s foremost animal advocacy organizations, with 75,000 members, dedicated to ending institutionalized abuse of animals by defending their rights, welfare and habitat. The group’s many accomplishments include: saving hundreds of dogs and cats by organizing rescue operations following the Oakland/Berkeley firestorm, liberating 40 dolphins held captive off the coast of Japan, rescuing 180 beagles scheduled for death in the dissection labs of the UC Davis veterinary school, canceling cocaine addiction research on monkeys at New York University and the bone-breaking experiments on retired racing greyhounds by the US Army.
